About this Resource:
*Creative Connectors is a series of case studies showing how “success-FULL” artists & creators are connecting with their true fans and a follow-up tool from the free resource The Connection Blueprint by Stop The Starving Artist.
Each example in this series is made up of the creator (or artist), the vehicle (or creation), and the 3 connection components - the belief, opponent, and story.
Use these case studies to see how YOU could better authentically connect with your audience through your own work, social media, and heART based marketing.
✅ The Creator (Artist): Lewis Rossignol
Since graduating in 2017 with a degree in illustration and design, Rossignol has worked on a wide variety of projects in print magazines, on skateboards, guitar pedals, album covers, books, adorning beer bottles and of course, on gallery walls. Rossignol’s background in blue collar work, music production, painting, and photography all lend themselves to his process.
✅ The Vehicle (The Creation): The Art
Lewis Rossignol’s inspiration for illustration aligns with the jittery sketchbooks and surrealist contemporary drawings that best represent him. “I draw inspiration from all areas of life, including but not limited to interesting people, architecture, music, and nature. Like many others from my generation, I also draw inspiration from pop culture, movies, and television, especially from the 80s and 90s, which should be apparent from my work.” he said.
⚠️⚠️⚠️The 3 Components That Make It Connect:
NOW FOR THE GOLD! In the Connection Blueprint, we outline 3 important components that allow your fans to establish a quicker and more compelling connection with YOU as the artist: Your Belief, Opponent, and Story.
Check out the hand picked content below and let us know in the comments if you can spot the BELIEF, OPPONENT, and STORY in his videos.
Now.. Share what jumps out at you: What do you think he believes? Who is he opposing? Do you catch any of his story that helps others connect?
Here are just a few examples we spotted on how he uses these 3 components to connect with his audience in an authentic, true to self, and success-FULL way:
⚠️ Belief:
“If you stand for something you will have people for you and people against you. But if you stand for nothing you will have nobody for you and nobody against you.” -Maurice Saatchi
These are a couple of beliefs that we’ve noticed:
Rossignol is open about how his Tourette’s diagnosis has impacted his approach to art. He believes there is an equal importance placed on both the challenge and the stress relieving properties of being immersed in creating.
He believes the process is just as important as the finished piece and thinks perfection is unattainable. He practices a “loose” attitude while creating and lets his art speak for itself, even if its not what people expect.
⚠️ Opponent:
”The formulation of the problem is often more essential than its solution, which may be merely a matter of mathematical or experimental skill.” ― Albert Einstein
The opponent defines the problem you and your fans are up against. If you know the problem well, the solution becomes more clear.
Rossignol’s opponent is those who expect perfection, he knows his art doesn’t have to be perfect and he is unapologetic about his style.
He is also anti people pleasing. He is very open about how he doesn’t strive to make people happy with his art, it makes him happy and people can take it or leave it. “I do what I do. People either love it or they hate it. Or they think it’s ok,” he says in a post.
⚠️ Story:
He recently worked a project where he provided Limited Edition cover art to the Grammy winning album Igor from Tyler, the Creator in 2019, as well as a solo art opening at The Eric Buterbaugh Gallery in Hollywood.
Lately Rossignol has been busy creating art courses with Carla Sonheim and he’s recently released his most comprehensive art book to date, Top Drawer.”
